February is known as Black History month. Dr. Carter G. Woodson chose February as Black History month because of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln's birthdays; those two people hugely impacted the African-American people. February, although originally just for that reason, is also named as Black History month because of many other events. Some of these include the birth of W. E. B. Dubois, who was a very important civil rights leader. Another important date in February was February 3, 1870, when the 15 Amendment (which lets black people vote) was passed. Also, on February 25, 1870, the first black U.S. senator was sworn in. The NAACP, a very important civil rights group, began in February, as well. As you can see, February is a very important month in history.

MLK Jr. Day: Not a Day Off, But a Day On!

Martin Luther King, Jr. had a very large part in the fight against racism. He gave many speeches in public, expressing his feelings and opinions openly to help peacefully win this fight like no other man had been courageous enough to do. He was a very controversial man, and his brave actions lead to his sad death on April 4th, 1968. Martin Luther King, Jr. has made some great accomplishments, such as the Nobel Peace Prize. He was very committed to his community and helping those in need. On January 19th, think of this day without school not as a day off, but a day on! Try to go around your community and help, just like Martin Luther King, Jr. did. You might want to do community service or help someone in need. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a wonderful man, and we here in Student Council strive to follow his example.

We have spirit! Yes we do!
The other day, someone asked me, "Why do we have spirit days?" Why do we have spirit days? Spirit days are for the entire school to work towards one goal (everyone should wear hats, everyone should wear their clothes backwards, etc.), and so they help build a community. I think that building a community is a very important thing for a school to do to so everyone feels happy and welcome. Spirit days are also a chance to show your spirit for Ridgecrest, and a way to make school fun and something you look forward to. Of course, it's fun to learn, but spirit days are another way to have fun! There are a couple of spirit days coming up, so I hope you all participate! Backwards Day is on December 19th, Pajama day is on January 16th, and Twin/Triplet day is on January 30th.
I hope to see you all showing your spirit soon! Goodbye and have a wonderful day!

Finally A Long, Long Break!
It's time for the holidays again! We really need a long break just to recover from all the school work. As you all probably know it's the time to sit down in front of a warm fire, eating fresh baked cookies and drinking a warm cup of hot chocolate. It's also almost time to go outside and build a snowman with all your friends. We are personally excited for all those half days and the two weeks off until next year. In other words, we have the rest of the year off to relax.

A Spoon Full of Sugar...
RC is helping the Shoreline School district Holiday Food Drive. We are collecting sugar. We are Why?? RC is in charge of collecting the sugar. Other schools in the district are collecting different items for the Holiday Food drive. Our school goal is 300 5lbs bags of sugar which is equal to 1500 pounds of sugar. That's a lot of sugar!!! We are also collecting items from the ten most wanted list so bring those too! We are promoting the food drive early so you can start buying sugar and other foods at cheap prices. So start collecting as much food as you can!!!
We are also collecting other important food items that are really needed. Check our announcements page for our 10 Most Wanted Food Items.

Insider's Perspective on the November 20th Meeting...
Well I hope you like the blog so far. Here is some info on the November 20th meeting. The meeting was called to order by the Co-presidents, we (the reps) sat there waiting anxiously to have our named called to make sure we were accounted for being at the meeting. All of us had a huge discussion about issues of the school. That was only the first part...
We then walked out the door and started snapping pictures of the whole student council for the website. After that was done, we broke up into our committees and started to get to work. I was one of the members in the website committee so I was busy updating the blog while Gigi (One of the Co-Presidents) was busy updating the website with images and upcoming events. Other committees were working on things such as posters and filling the showcases. Already it was time to go. Time to look forward to another meeting.

November 13th Meeting Highlights
Welcome to the second student council blog. In this blog, I will be talking about Thursday, November 13th meeting.
Towards the beginning of the meeting, one of the presidents had to begin the meeting by calling the meeting to order. During this meeting, it was my job to do it. It took a wile for people to here me, causing me to have to say it twice. Once we got organized, we stood for the Pledge of Allegiance. When everybody sat down, it was time for the quote(s) of the week. Since it was Veterans Day on Tuesday, we had some Veterans Day quotes. I have no clue how she gets so many good quotes. I think there were at least 4 of them. So far I was only able to find one the previous week.
This meeting, we didn’t have much Items/issues we needed to discuss. I think only think 1 person raised their hand. We didn’t have much time to discuss that many things either. Mrs. Mehlert came in to talk to us about bringing sugar to raise money. Our goal was to get 300 bags of 5 pound sugar. For each class, you get 10 points for a bag of sugar, 5 points for an item off of the 10 most wanted items, and if you want to, 30 points for a pair of pajamas. She also said the class with the most points gets a root beer float party.
After she left, it was time to do committees. I’m in charge of the spirit day committee. In each committee, there is an officer in charge of it. In this meeting, there was only 30 minutes left to do committees, so we didn’t have as much time to do the things that we usually do each week.
